Getting your first ten clients as a new consultancy

The first ten clients are the hardest, because you are selling on promise, not proof. Here is how new service firms actually win them — and what the buyer research says about being found first.

Every consultancy, recruitment desk and boutique agency starts at zero clients, and the first ten are the steepest climb of the whole business — because you are asking people to buy an outcome you cannot yet point to. Nobody wins them with clever marketing. They win them the same handful of ways.

Start with the people who already trust you

Your first clients almost never come from strangers. They come from the people who worked with you before you went out on your own — old colleagues, former managers, people who have seen you deliver. The uncomfortable but true first step is to tell that circle, specifically and individually, what you now do. Not a broadcast post; a direct message.

Do the first few jobs unreasonably well

Early clients are buying a story they can tell about you. A handful of engagements done visibly, thoroughly, communicatively well become the referrals that win the next handful. Over-deliver early on purpose — it is the cheapest marketing you will ever do.

Ask for the referral, plainly

Referrals are the dominant channel for small service firms, and most go unrealised because nobody asked. A happy client rarely thinks to introduce you unless you make it easy and specific — "if you know one other firm dealing with X, I’d be glad to help them too." Ask at the moment they are most pleased.

Look like a firm, because the search comes first

A prospect looks you up before they reply, and 6sense’s buyer research shows most of the decision happens before you are ever contacted. What they find — a real address with your name on it, your services in plain words, some sign you are a going concern — decides whether the conversation even starts. It is the difference between "let me think about it" and "let’s talk." See how your page works.

The takeaway

Win the first ten from your network, over-deliver on purpose, and ask for referrals plainly. Look like a real firm, because the buyer research shows the decision is largely made before you are contacted — then keep clients by making their work visible.
